research

As part of the operation of the ‘velanidi’ residency program in Peleta, a participatory research program is carried out to learn about and understand the place, its cultural heritage, the environment, and the local communities of the Peleta plateau.

The two-story stone building that houses ‘velanidi’ dates back to 1903. Following the standards of the traditional architecture of the area served as a home-scale winery. An important architectural element of the space around which the building’s morphology is developed is the built stomping basin for grapes. Two troughs were used for the operation of the wine presses. In one of them, a part of a wooden press, without the barrel, is preserved to this day. Two low windows were used for emptying the baskets with grapes into the stamping basin.

The building’s history and architectural documentation are the subject of systematic participatory research involving anthropologists, historians, archaeologists, architects, and our guest artists. The research’s purpose is to gradually restore the winery and transform it into a hub for hosting artists and creators of children’s books.
